Please Read Prior To Posting - Notification From Group Hosts - Approach To Blocking Members

This discussion thread is pinned.

Last edited Thu Mar 3, 2016, 10:08 AM - Edit history (3)

Due to the recent influx of new posters in the African American Group we've come to the decision that we must depart from our patient approach of asking disruptive posters to remove themselves. Unfortunately one of these requests (a second request) by a group host (Number23) was hidden by a DU Jury on Saturday August 9th.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/118720489#post99

At this time - we had perhaps five members on our Blocked Member list. At time of this notification, we now have 31 members on our Blocked Member List. The heavy handed approach has been to protect regular subscribers to the group, as well as to make the group 'friendlier' to those newbies to the group who post here with Positive Intent.

Going forward, we will give a first and last warning to the DU Member who is creating the disruption. This is being done in order to tamper down posts in other boards indicating that the blocked member did nothing wrong.

We will copy and paste the offensive/disruptive post into the body of that first/last warning post. This is being done due to posters being blocked, then deleting the offensive post.

Please Note Our Statement of Purpose:
Discuss topics and issues which affect the African-American community. DUers from all races are welcome to participate.

All are welcome as long as they bring empathy and positive intent to the group. We experience America differently back here. Our regular subscribers are people who care and who are respectful of our experiences. They deserve a safe place to discuss issues outside of the election process. For our newbies with Positive Intent - welcome.

For those who come to agitate - please note . . . we see you ignore us when the issue does not impact your daily life or belief in candidates/politicians/leaders.

This post was made in agreement with the main hosts and other hosts. The reason why I elected to post it is because my transparency page is blank. I will be able to withstand a spiteful alert and possible hide from a DU Jury.

Thanks in advance,
JustAnotherGen

I was criticized for correcting a poster who called the BLM ladies mouthy.
Unfortunately the thread was locked before I could respond.
Apparently, I was 'pretending to be Black' so my opinion of his shitty wording was dismissed.

once or twice, because as an older white woman I don't think I have much standing to say anything here. It seems as if you, as a group, have been incredibly tolerant of disrupters, and I'm genuinely distressed that you have had to put up with such nonsense in a forum called Democratic Underground.

Ban away. Some people do deserve it.

I myself have been banned from one group and one group only, and while I think they (the Hillary group) are far too sensitive to criticism, it is within their rights to ban whoever they want.

So please keep your group strong.

Maybe they need to do that to people who are going after certain DUers because of their cultural or racial affiliations. Or, they can turn off their ability to alert if they're going OTT.

Maybe they need to do a little selective moderating themselves, just for a bit. It might make a few people shape up.

The thing I think they really need to do is stop treating newcomers like they're equally vested here--because they aren't. Someone shows up on a Tuesday, racks up a thousand posts in a few days, and they're going to see jury duty at least once a day if they're on a lot. I think in order to hit that point, it should be a function of TIME and posts--i.e. six months as a member, and 1000 posts--whichever comes LAST. That would slow down a lot of this garbage.

And unfortunately, Blue_Tires has been retired as a host due to his transparency page showing. I had a post where I was warning someone (as stated in this thread) temporarily hidden because someone alerted on it claiming it violated DU rules. I appealed and it was reinstated. However, it makes me worried about warning people. If people are going to hide warning posts, I'm just going to block without a warning.

Also, I've made heaven05 a host, but as he isn't a star member, I'm not sure if he has the group superpowers.

Most of our hosts are not active right now, and as this is an African American group, I think we should have more African American hosts. If someone is a long-term and active member and is African American and is willing to host, please let me know. If I don't recognize you and you don't have a long history with many posts I can search on the site, please don't bother contacting me.

I would be quite concerned that juries were hiding host posts trying to moderate the group... I don't think admins intended that to happen.

Just a thought. I know this is not recent, but you still might consider direct email to admins about the issue.
