Biggest problem in this country comes from people who lack both personal boundaries and filters.

(72 posts)Many black women are told (sometimes, directly to their faces by their own family) that their natural hair is ugly, unprofessional, wild etc., and it MUST be straightened or covered up.
I always loved Michelle regardless of what she did to her hair, but yes this truly is a wonderful picture that means a lot.

(109,630 posts)I'm not black but I was bullied about my frizzy hair. I was happy to see Michelle's going natural. I'd love to see her start a trend.

(23,340 posts)I think you mean well, but your logic is off.
Hair texture is both a major difference, and a major emotional and at times political issue, between whites and blacks in America.
LiberalFighter
(53,512 posts)That means the texture too. Most people should understand that.

(72 posts)And if they did, did most people coo over how "exotic" it is?
Or were they told it's nasty, nappy, and unkempt?
OR did they go through an expensive, painful once-every-other-month chemical process to make it look big and curly, because they were shamed by peers and family that their natural hair is too thin?
See, that's the difference here. That's why it's a big deal to some of us.
When you're told your natural "black" hair is lesser-than, all your life by EVERYONE (including people on your "side" supposedly) to the point where you begin to believe it, then you see the FIRST LADY is proud of hers.
I don't fault her for not wearing it that way when the Obamas were in the Whitehouse.
The avalanche of Assgoblins who call themselves the "alt-right" would pile on even more bullshit complaints about them, in the form of dog whistling (i.e. "Her arms are showing AND her hair is unkempt! Not FLOTUS material at all!!"
Still, it is an awesome picture for us, and YES it has meaning, especially now with the white nationalists becoming more brazen, and threatening to those of us who know we're hated.

I do not recognize the POS currently in the WH as being anywhere near legitimately-elected and I never will.

(35,986 posts)... she's not first lady any more, just a private citizen.
I think that while Michelle was first lady she was always looking great and probably wore some very nice natural-looking wigs to avoid criticism from shallow people in the media. I never held it against her and I thought it was totally understandable. Actresses and celebrities wear wigs all the time and nobody says a word.
So she can take it easy now. Good for her, and she still looks great.
