At least 82 officers across the country have faced murder or manslaughter charges for on-duty shootings since the beginning of 2005, according to research from Philip Stinson, an associate professor of criminology at Ohio’s Bowling Green State University. Just 29 of those cases have ended in conviction, although a number are still pending. No officer has been convicted so far this year.

Juries have shown time and time again that they’re “not willing to second-guess officers who get on the stand and testify at their own trial in their own defense that he or she thought that they were gonna get killed and that’s why they used deadly force,” Stinson said.

Stinson said police kill around 1,000 civilians each year, and that verdicts like the one in Yanez’s case suggest the legal system may be willing to accept that these casualties are “just the cost of doing business.”

What I don't understand is why anyone would accept that cost. By letting these officers off they're saying their fine with police getting away with murder.

The little burb of Falcon Heights is some kind of weird joke. About 5000 people and a convenience store. I drive there all the time as it is the easiest way to get from St. Paul to my house. The police from St. Anthony ( A slightly larger joke) who patrol it main activity consists of driving up and down Larpenteur Avenue, which is a major street that runs through it. When they get to end of the mile or so stretch they make U turn and go back. Whether out of boredom or revenue they are notorious for micky mouse stops. I always give my check your equipment before you leave home speech to my black friends, but I know they are going to get pulled over anyway for driving while black. The institutional racism in this country is so deep and pernicious it defies description. I remember when I was young traveling with an older black friend of mine who had a decent car to get from gig to gig. He would pretend he was my chauffeur sometimes., and I was only along to handle his gear help out, occasionally to play with one of the best men I have ever known.
As far as probable cause to pull you over, I've had a cop give me a ticket for not stopping for a stop sign after I had had stopped and waited for four or five cars. Another time I was pulled over for "erratic" driving coming home rom a church. Both times I had black passengers. I could just scream, but my black friends just roll with it. I was married to an AA woman for a long time and she had no anger about, but I do. It's time for all of us white folk to look in the mirror and realize we are part of the problem. We are willing to accept the benefits of white privilege but not the guilt.
