(18,029 posts)With the author. Invitations could also include that time to engage with the speaker. You would think those in the Ivory Tower of academia whose job is to engage in ideas would be up to the task.

that 'hot button' issues can be used to divide and thusly solidify already firm opinions and sometimes incorrect opinions about racial and gender politics in america, to name two. Part of the "dumbing down" of americans at all levels of education and society? Suppression of independent thought and intelligence, if you will.
Had written discourse recently with another DUer on 'mob mentality' black and white, the DUer's argument, taking over public/academic discourse, civility. Trump has enabled and encouraged the white lynch mob mentality, again. Problem is he is a potus, not a McCarthy. AA people and POC are reacting to this suppression, sometimes with suppression of speech and engagement ourselves. We must, as we have for generations since W.E.B. Dubois, et al. continue to try and engage in positive back and forth with opponents and misinformed allies, when possible. Keep our base as solid as possible.
The "Ivory Tower" privilege and entitlement power to suppress proper discourse must be attacked and broken down to be that part of the bin of extinct human history that will continue to assure our evolution and survival.
At this juncture in history, I am not so sure we will remain the fairly cohesive united states. Not sure at all. Only sites like this help keep my nose above the swirling rapids of division and hate that has overtaken this society, its groups, races and cultures that threaten to drown us all.
I do applaud your efforts.

(23,340 posts)I am a pretty hardcore free speech person, and believe that we must engage with all viewpoints, and restrict no one from our campuses. The truth will win out in that situation. Even in the era of Trump.

Our RW antagonists are pulling out all stops as is represented by their president's obsession in destroying anything remotely connected to President Obama and his legacy as POTUS. It's the sacred and sworn duty of this potus to also disenfranchise as many POC of their basic human right to decent humane treatment and life.
Like any war you have the fanatics bent on violence, CHARLESTON and CHARLOTTSVILLE , a church massacre and white supremacist riot. Can't be hidden shots of the RW insurrection currently in motion. Waffle House, the cop who had been on the job for 1 hr shooting a running away 17 year old AA in the back. Throw down magazine and weapon(gun) 'found' in area of altercation. Shooting and summary execution of children, lynching women in their jail cell for minor traffic violations and talking back to massa and his surrogates under cover of badge and gun. Trayvon Martin, his civilian murderer disguised as neighborhood watch and many many more in say the last 5 years. Even under the administration of President Obama or because of it, the State and civilian authorized summary executioners were very busy.
So I agree, even in this era we need to Know what the enemies of decency and progress think and are going to say about brown people from "shithole countries", this one and 'manifest destiny', liberals, progressives, "fake news", and please don't be surprised or shocked because they have said the same thing generation to generation and all they have been able accomplish is spew the same old ignorance and hate. thanks.
