Related: About this forumOpinion: Tom Brady has gotten an undeserved pass for his past support of Donald Trump
Tom Brady was happy to talk politics until he wasnt.
The Make America Great Again hat in his locker, the flippant endorsement of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. Only when those ties became inconvenient did Brady decide he wanted to stick to sports, and that he preferred to be a beacon of positivity rather than delve into societys thorny ills.
How mighty white of him.
Bradys ability to enter and exit the debate at his choosing, to shield himself from accountability, is the height of white privilege. As this country grapples with the far reaches of systemic racism, look no further than Brady, for whom the expectations, and allowances granted, will always be different.
Whiteness is the benefit of the doubt, said David Leonard, author of "Playing While White: Privilege and Power on and off the Field." When Tom Brady says, 'I was just given the hat, or 'Hes just a friend of mine, or when he skips the White House and says, 'I had a different engagement, he gets the benefit of the doubt. He gets to be an individual.

(291 posts)Both his parents got it. His father was quoted as saying, '... it was a matter of life and death.. that's serious stuff'. I wish they'd stick a mic in Brady's face and ask him about the 'hoax' his friend decided to play down.

You do have a very important point regarding the trivialization made of violence towards women made by sports figures.

(7,957 posts)His wife did NOT give $150M to relief in Haiti. It was $1.5M. Considering she is worth almost half a billion dollars that's a lot less than many other celebs give.
Also, Brady joining a challenge doesn't mean HE gave $100M to four charities.
The are various lists of the most charitable athletes. He is listed on only one I found (that was for giving $100,000 to JJ Watt's charity.

His wife may have said she wasn't voting for drump. Doesn't mean he didn't. Sounds like you are letting your hero worship get in the way of facts.

Multi-millionaire adolescents are going to play a schoolyard game for the benefit of billionaires while the country is crippled with a pandemic and our political structure is threatened more seriously than since the Civil War.
Brady is an ass but so are most of his fellow players. They just don't get as much press as Brady.
I used to enjoy football. At this time, fuck 'em. There are real people in our country who need help as they face life-or-death troubles. These pampered, overly-paid juveniles are pretty low on my list of priorities.
