(711 posts)I used to work the annual PowWow at Fort Omaha. The year my now 25year old granddaughter was old enough, (5th grade), she volunteered to carry water for the dancers. As Chief John Wolf called for the open dance, he motioned for her to stand beside him and dance the circle with him. I can't describe the look on her face; joy, wonder? Not good enough.
I will always cherish that day. I had a great respect for the Chief, but I loved him for that gift.

(711 posts)and always made me emotional in a good way. I worked them until my legs got too old. They were a twelve hour day, usually more. Good memories for my granddaughter, she felt special and accepted, she told me.
And, yes I remember Iron Eyes Cody! My grandmother told me he was much respected as an actor and advocate for his people. This was the late sixties and she was introducing me to politics.
