I am not saying that this is great literature but it WAS a great love story. .
There are I think 8 books in this series and I could only get through 3.5, so no expert here - but if you enjoy a love story with some time travel (1945 back to 1743 Scotland) and history - this is it.

Overview
Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another...
In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon--when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach--an "outlander"--in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord...1743.

(38,128 posts)I read the second one, too but stopped there. "Outlander" was great. The second book was a little jarring with the POV changes.

(23,156 posts)I like it, but I have very deep-seated resistance to reading most series. Plus, I prefer science-fictional time travel, not romance time travel.
However, I saw Diana Gabaldon at Bubonicon last year. It's a science-fiction con, and she was very enthusiastically received. Plus, she's funny and smart, two very endearing qualities in my opinion.
