What are you reading the week of Sunday, December 7, 2014?

I finally finished Broken Harbor by Tana French. I have read 3 of her Dublin Murder Squad books and each on leaves me unsettled, she likes to end on an unresolved chord, which is like any story in real life. There is always more. Well I dropped it off at the book drop yesterday morning before the library opened, so I didn't have a book to read.

Last night I was scanning through my untidy bookcase and came across a slipcase with 3 books in it. It is The Croswicks Journal by Madeleine L'Engle. How long this gem has been hiding among other less worthies, well I couldn't tell you. I suppose it is a memoir and not fiction but if the 1st chapter of book 1 A Circle of Quiet is representative of the rest, it is a worthy ready. Ms. L'Engel (November 29, 1918 – September 6, 2007) was a fabulous wordsmith. Some here maybe familiar with her Wrinkle in Time series.

Political satire by longtime NPR reporter Scott Simon. The mayor of Chicago eats 8 slices of poisoned pizza one evening in his office, and dies facedown in his deep dish. With a power vacuum at the top, politics ensues. I'm about 90 pages in; so far so good.

Mrs. Enthusiast is just finishing Broken Harbour by Tana French. She liked it very much. She said it was moving. She did attack the book, reading it in as big a chunks as she could manage. We both feel that helps with the flow.

I finished Ratking by Michael Dibdin. After reading this I got the idea TPTB modeled contemporary US after Italy. I mean Italy is a mess politically and it is reflected in the law enforcement. I'm going to have to read more of the Aurelio Zen books. I think Mrs. Enthusiast is going to read Ratking next.

I am currently reading Stephen King's Revival. So far so good.

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. What a beautiful writing style. The author conveys so much in a very relaxed manner with an almost minimalist approach.
