The Lion in the Living Room

These are my comments about The Lion in the Living Room, by Abigail Tucker, copyright 2016. It's a somewhat negative book about the damage that house cats can do, and yet they have such a hold on us mere humans. Tucker lists numerous incidents of cats eliminating the local animal populations and spreading diseases, yet have done little to control vermin. However, I did learn some useless trivia, which I will repeat here.
1. Kitty litter was invented in 1947.
2. Neutering cats doesn't solve the problem of cat overpopulation, since neutered cats live longer.
3. Cats don't like brightness, and they like it warm, 85 degrees F.
4. I knew about calicos almost always being female, but I didn't know that orange cats are usually male.

The one detail which surprised me: that domestic cats can mate with small wildcats and their offspring can have children as well. I always thought that the kittens would be sterile.

I must say it left me feeling a little depressed and guilty about having 2 cats that I do not let run free. It is almost like we are imprisoning them.
