Like Judgment Day by Michael D'Orso

In early January 1923, white mobs destroyed the black town of Rosewood FL. The true death toll is unknown, ranging from less than ten to over a hundred. Survivors fled and did not return; the story was largely lost in the silence on all sides, until 60 Minutes did a piece in the early 1980s. A lobbying effort before the legislature finally produced a limited bill compensating survivors; this passed in 1994, but not all funds were claimed

This book discusses the event briefly, and the long forgetfulness that followed, and then the politics of the compensation bill and its aftermath
