Read and gave as gifts all the original James Harriot books as they were published.

Watched the first series which was fairly true to the original books. This one is driving me nuts. My daughter loves it and compared to what is available to watch it is ok. I do not have my original books but what the heck happened to Siegfried's pack of dogs? Did I dream them up? They are definitely NOT in the newest PBS series.

But in my head I can still see James going to the door for the first time when he is applying for the job and that pack of dogs comes to the door. I guess not that important to the story but part of the whole first setting to me.

It was hilarious and set the tone.

Yes I remember the opening scene you describe with the pack of dogs creating havoc.

I have read the books and seen the original series quite a few times.

And then once Siegfried went on one of his rants about how too many people cater to their pets and let them have the run of the place in an uncivilized way. The whole time the pack of dogs are acting crazy and James is trying to keep a straight face.

Edit to add: I miss the old Mrs. Hall. I cannot get used to the new one.
