(7,515 posts)Now expand your horizons. I haven't read horror in years, I used to enjoy King and Rice as well as your list. In fact I now get my fill of fiction reading books on the economy and politics and haven't been able to finish a novel in years.

(10,039 posts)I always read really cheery books, so I'll just give you a taste of the depressing books that are out there I guess.
Escape from Camp 14 by Blaine Harden
The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee
Uranium by Tom Zoellner
The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan
Switching Time by Richard K. Baer
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

(5,504 posts)But sometimes I need a good scare. I think that the scariest non-fiction book is The Communist Manifesto. How many people died because of that book?

(10,039 posts)I'd go read about genocides and environmental doomsday books personally. Or do you mean scary as in how stupid and dangerous people are in America? Or scary as in maimed childhoods, Hitler or NASA space disasters? Scary as in disease or drugs? Serial killers, and rapists? Nixon? Flesh eating bacteria? Clowns?
Too much to account for. But I do say those books I just pointed you to are scary in one way or another.

(5,504 posts)I guess I was talking about supernatural scary.

(10,039 posts)If you want to learn about monsters, that might be neat. Insects are very interesting and deadly too. There's definitely more animals/insects you haven't heard of that are scary as hell. Reality is stranger than fiction after all.
