to lay awake in the deep night being besieged by ghosts

open eyed in darkness sight swallow spit’s sacred hosts
whispered prayers and tossing the peaceful and violent
a dry house creaks and groans sounds of sharp warning
false footsteps echo and ring the wind rustles in corners
a strange voice whines and moans songs of the adoring
clear cold sweat blankets cling to skins of the mourners
as the sunrises in the window a dull slow glows brighter
dreams evade any recognition swirl in the sleeplessness
carrying quiet hints of shadow the defeat of the fighter
belies concepts of precognition attempts to seek justice
in full daylight are still murmurs of the spirits deflecting
souls disguised by the rumors of the gods genuflecting
