44 Years ago, Alien was released... (epic Twitter thread)

The making of this classic, is an incredible story

( pics, clips, and anecdotes )

Excerpts…

When Alejandro Jodorovsky’s ill-fated Dune project collapsed in 1976, effects supervisor Dan O’Bannon was left homeless. Living with his writing pal, Ronald Shusett, they came up with the idea for a science fiction/horror film. One which would change their lives forever.

Scott wanted a female perspective on so had 12 women secretaries from Fox watch Sigourney Weaver’s screen test (below). He said an argument broke out over whether she was more like Jane Fonda or Faye Dunaway, and he knew he had his leading lady.

There are perhaps a couple dozen of those, that are completely irresistible to me. Ripley -- I mean, Sigourney Weaver is two months older than I am. I was born in December 1949; she was born in October 1949.

Nothing in any prior Hollywood film would prepare audiences for this. People could not pull up a clip or an online spoiler review to know what happens. The trailer for the film certainly didn't spoil anything which can be viewed below. It must have terrified audiences in an unprecedented manner or at least not to the magnitude of anything since Psycho or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Calling the film a classic does not do it justice.

It's still one of the most horrifying movies I've ever seen, although I thought the second one was even better. The others were terrible, IMO.
