COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) A former U.S. Marine and alleged member of an extremist group will spend two years in prison for his role in the Columbia riots of 2020 that followed protests against police brutality, as well as for accessing child pornography.
Joshua Barnard, of Florida, pleaded guilty Thursday to charges including rioting, petit larceny, breaking into a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance and three counts of sexual exploitation of a minor 3rd degree.
Prosecutors say 28-year-old Barnard was a catalyst for the chaos that ensued at the Columbia Police Department headquarters on the night of Saturday May 30, 2020, turning peaceful protests at the South Carolina State House into unrest and violence.
More than 100 people were charged in connection with the riots on the weekend of May 30, 2020, according to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott.
