A's stadium bill on hold as Nevada Legislature adjourns until Monday

Nevada’s Legislature took no further action on the Oakland Athletics stadium bill Thursday, day two of a special session to consider the project that now will extend at least into next week.

The special-session bill mirrored the original bill, which would direct up to $380 million in public funds toward a major-league ballpark in Las Vegas. The public funding package would include $180 million in state-issued tax credits and $120 million in bonds issued by Clark County, which also would contribute $25 million to infrastructure costs; the ballpark site also would be exempt from property taxes for 30 years.

No maybes about it, A’s Las Vegas ballpark plan doesn't have the votes (OPINION)

The A’s thought they could waltz over to our neighbors to the east and get those baseball-hungry rubes to rubber-stamp their little ballpark scheme. Doesn’t seem to be as easy as they expected.

After a contentious special session Wednesday that lasted almost until midnight, with a highly skeptical legislature and some damning public comments, the Nevada legislature was supposed to reconvene at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. There was some thought there might be a vote on the bill that would hijack the A’s out of Oakland and into Las Vegas.

But after three hours of waiting for the session to start, Jon Ralston, CEO of the Nevada Independent news site, tweeted: “What does this mean? Pretty simple. They don’t have the votes.”

Well, billionaire Donald Fisher has until Monday to grease as many palms possible to ram his proposal through. Does the Nevada legislature have the backbone to stand firm?

Fisher might have another fight on his hands too: casino owners. If your business model was deeply vested in gaming, would you want your customers sitting in a baseball stadium or sitting at your craps tables?

The Oakland Athletics have the lousiest team in the entire MLB, camped in the cellar at .231, 26.5 games behind in the AL(West) division.
