American ice hockey player Adam Johnson has died following a “freak accident” on the ice as he played for English side Nottingham Panthers, the team said in a statement.

In the second period of the team’s Challenge Cup match against the Sheffield Steelers on Saturday, Johnson appeared to suffer a serious neck injury after colliding with a Sheffield player.

And, beyond sad. I feel bad for the players, coaches, etc. who had to witness that. I hope there will be therapy available for them.

Clint Malarchuk is probably having flashbacks right now. Poor guy.

A teammate of tragic Nottingham Panthers star Adam Johnson has said the team 'stand with' the Sheffield Steelers player who he collided with. Westin Michaud posted a statement on X, formerly Twitter, after Steelers defenceman Matt Petgrave was the target of online abuse following the fatal collision in a Challenge Cup game between the two teams on Saturday, October 28.

"We wholeheartedly stand with Matt Petgrave. The hate that Matt is receiving is terrible and completely uncalled for. I was at ice level on the bench closest to the accident, I saw both players moving fast.

"The unintentional clip of the Panther player's leg by the Sheffield player caused the somersault. It's clear to me his actions were unintentional and anyone suggesting otherwise is mistaken. Let's come together and not spread unwarranted hate to someone who needs our support."

Google what kind of player the Karate Kid was...look at his record.

Then tell me this wasn't intentional.

As Sean Avery, ex-nhler says, and I am paraphrasing..'he didn't get up that morning saying 'I'm going to murder someone today', but the kick WAS intentional'...

Same when a drunk driver gets in a vehicle and kills someone...he didn't wake up that day saying "hmm..good day to get drunk and kill someone in a car crash.."...but it doesn't change the legality or moral implications of their actions.

Bruce Lee was looking to hurt that guy...no doubt.

was slowed down substantially. I saw it. In real time, the whole event took a matter of a couple of seconds. It happened so quickly, there's no way Petgrave had time to even think about kicking Johnson. I'll also point out that Petgrave is black. If he was white, I doubt we'd be hearing from most of these people. Most of this shit is coming from the right-wing social media cesspool.

Oh, Sean Avery is a fucking jackass.
