NBC is reportedly parting ways with legendary broadcaster Al Michaels ahead of the NFL playoffs.
The 79-year-old was unaware that his role was in jeopardy last month, Andrew Marchand of the New York Post reported Tuesday.
Michaels reportedly said he believed that he was still going to call the game on NBC, but did not know who else would be working.
Its in my deal, he said when Marchand mentioned NBCs uncertainty in November. Where are you hearing that from? Thats part of my deal. Are you hearing something that Im not hearing?
Michaels is heralded as one of the greatest play-by-play announcers in footballs history. After working for ABC from 1976-2006, he joined NBC as the voice of Sunday Night Football.

(258 posts)I just wish they would unload that perinial taint licking knob gobbler Collinsworth. He gives nothing to the broadcast except over the top praise for has been players...

(2,612 posts)Al's been slipping this year that was pretty obvious, but they should've let him finish the year out IMO. Herbstreit and Collinsworth are about the only play by play guys left that dissect the game at a granular level for those in it for the game itself and that don't sound like drunk Patriot fans annoying the shit out of you at the bar.

(16,261 posts)seems rather disinterested in actually doing the play by play which is supposed to be his job. I know the games often stink, but he's got the lowest rate of following the on-field action of any of the major announcing guys. Way too much talk about how he's been socializing with this or that owner/executive/former player, or gossipy shit about players/teams not involved in the game he's supposed to be narrating.
And when he does bother to do the play by play, he doesn't know the players' names -- outside of the star players -- at a rate which is unusually high relative to his past self and current co-workers.

Probably the same crew who claimed Stefon Diggs wants out of Buffalo. These lameos are pathetic.

(31,798 posts)realize Al played it a tad too safe and banal. I can understand the change, though to do it on Week 14 and behind Michael's back is pretty damn low.

Good broadcasters are fading away. I kind of blame fantasy sports and Vegas. The announcers pander to listeners who care more about individual stats and records than the atmosphere of the game being played right in front of their eyes.
