Who is the Athlete of the Year for 2023? ...

In my book, Spain's female soccer player Midfielder Aitana Bonmatí should be the Athlete of the Year
She has collected some serious hardware in 2023.

If you haven't seen her play, go to Youtube and search her name.
There is a slew of games and highlights of Bonmatí displaying her magic with a soccer ball.

Here is a list of her accomplishments

Here is what she won

Supercopa de España with FC Barcelona

Liga F with FC Barcelona

UEFA Champions League with FC Barcelona

FIFA Women's World Cup with Spain

Here is what she's been awarded

UEFA Player of the Season

UEFA Women's Player of the Year

FIFA Women's World Cup Ballon d'Or - Best Player in the World Cup Tournament

Ballon d'Or - Best Female Player in the World.

Nominated for FIFA Women's Player of the Year (Winner Announced on Jan. 15, 2024)

her spectacular play led to the highest ratings for women's college basketball and the highest ever single game attendance ever for a women's game.

She is so fun to watch

to a college athlete, credit for advancing women’s college sports, the admiration of thousands of girls and boys who look up to her as a player, lots of money for appearing in ads for national brands, the respect of her teammates and coaches, a soon-to-have degree with honors from the university of Iowa, etc.

Is that what you meant?

I looked her up, and she did win a lot of National awards in 2023, but she didn't win any international awards or lead her team to any major tournament championships, national or international in 2023.

Looking at her accomplishments, she is a worthy nominee.
I'm still sticking with Bonmatí.
Hey, I made a rhyme.

ever to score 3,000 points, hand out 900 assists (some were really spectacular today) and pull down 800 rebounds.

The ONLY player male or female.

As the announcer said today - right now Caitlin Clark is the face of basketball.

I always thought Pistol Pete Maravich was the best player I ever saw - Clark is quite similar. But you do't win a championship alone. despite having a great team, Iowa just came up one short last year.

Your choice is a good one, but I don't think she would score as many goals if she played in the Premier League

and she won every major tournament & every major award.
Hard not to see how she isn't the Athlete of the Year.
