cnn.com / January 15, 2023
Peacock scored a touchdown Saturday for its first NFL playoff game exclusively shown on the NBCUniversal-owned streamer, registering record ratings and internet usage for the matchup in the freezing cold between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins.
The Peacock Exclusive Wild Card game garnered 23 million total viewers, according to Nielsen. NBC said in a release that the game sets records for the most-streamed live event in US history and was also responsible for the most internet usage ever in the US on a single date, consuming 30% of internet traffic during the Saturday night game.
That number also includes viewership figures from the local NBC affiliates in Miami and Kansas City and on the NFL+ mobile app, where the game was also shown outside of Peacock.
Notably, the ratings for the exclusively streamed game was up 6% over last years primetime AFC Wild Card Game that was shown on NBCs broadcast network.

FROM THE LINK: Peacock had its largest single day ever in audience usage, engagement and time spent, with a record 16.3 million concurrent devices, NBC said, but it didnt reveal how many new subscribers were added.
----------------
Peacock offered one month of ad-supported content (content with commercials) for $5.99, and also a yearly subscription at 50% off. This tells me in addition to looking for subscriber fees they were looking for more long-term viewers, most likely so they could increase advertising rates.
There's going to be more of this.
Shit.

The ones without Peacock (I have it so watched a little of it) are furious. None of them did the free trial, they said fuck it.
I hope the NFL has made a big mistake here and it goes south on them, the sport should be illegal until the concussion issues are fixed. But it will never be illegal, will it. Just like Judge Cannon wont allow a trial in Florida for trump treason and nobody does anything about it etc.

Just out of curiosity was the game shown without commercials or did the people that paid have to watch commercials along with paying?

(5,767 posts)I used the TSN Canadian feed, and there were commercials, as well as public service spots sponsored by the Canadian government. Something we had here in the US before cable took over everything.
When they gave Amazon the exclusive rights to the Thursday night games, I knew it would be just a matter of time before the NFL expanded this new source of revenue. Greed knows no bounds.
Sports fans who attend the games are among the most gullible suckers there are. The NFL, NBA, and other major sports know that fans will keep packing stadiums and arenas for the 'big' games, no matter how high the tickets are.
Can you imagine a family of four in Dallas, spending upwards of a thousand dollars in tickets, parking, and concessions, to watch that shit-show performance by 'America's' team?
Yet they'll continue paying, and the NFL will keep raising their prices, as long as sports fans continue being gullible suckers.

(9,494 posts)To go to the games. NFL, MLB, NBA and some college football and basketball. However, I go to my local college basketball teams games for like $15 per ticket and they are top 25. Beer etc is expensive but you are not forced to buy it. Womens college sports are highly affordable.

DTV ..(Tegna, formerly Gannett)..shakedown..well they just agreed on a multi year contract..so our NBC channel 12 in AZ DTV is back..Playoffs over on Peacock..for now..so cancelled Peacock subscription this morning..Ceo Peacock was crowing about the success..as noted in this article..too bad so sad..it is not the cost, it is the principal..
NBC paid NFL $110,000 to carry playoff game..commercials suck..this is a terrible year in the NFL IMHO..bad taste..and to think Buffalo NY will build a stadium without a dome..and taxpayers will pay for it..and, in Nashville Tenn. another NFL stadium on the taxpayers dime..yup, bad taste in mouth..and we are, were, avid football fans..college football was more exciting ...
Go around the league and check out cost of tickets in any stadium..disgusting..not to mention NFL fans who don't have a smart TV..

(3,645 posts)I really hope the younger generations vote with the feet on things like this. It was tough to deal with during our son's interest in Baseball. It really puts class pressure onto too many people over games.

(9,960 posts)The 💰💰💰. Felt bad for Chief fans. But after Thursday night games, I saw this coming.
But at least Chief fans that paid got a good return on the money. What if you were a cowboys fan that paid to see a sure win for a first time playoff win in 28 years?
Like paying PPV for a fight of the century and its a knock out in 10 seconds.
How soon before the Super Bowl is PPV? Gotta pay for those commercial slots.
But, Chief fans, your guys are ready to take it home. They are Damn tough. Imagine sliding bare armed on that concrete hard field to catch a pass and run the ball with those arms bringing on the turf.
Congrats Chief fans. Buffalo game will be great, hope its free to watch.

(14,677 posts)was most streamed game in history. I was able to watch it locally, but not fair to other fans who arent local. It is ALL about $$$ for NBC. This week game against Buffalo on CBS.

(106,330 posts)and have some nostalgic feelings about KC Chiefs, but I can see how this is going to cause a lot of irritation for fans if it spreads. I don't like having to find a way to subscribe to ESPN to watch college games, but CBS (and now ABC) only carry a small proportion of the ones I want to watch. Still, it is possible to subscribe to Youtube TV or similar just for the season. To do so with multiple streaming services would be pretty irritating.

(63,196 posts)because it is just not fun to watch - too much money involved. College football and basketball nearly in that arena now.
Right now I am mostly a women's college basketball fan.

(9,494 posts)By going to Dave and Busters for the game. I spent over $200 after games for kids, supper, beer and tip. But I did save $5.99 and the kids had fun. I please note I have followed the Chiefs since the early 90s or I would have just skipped watching. Not sure what I would do next year if facing the same situation.

The combination was up 6% over last year's broadcast. They're trying to convince everybody that subscribing is the way to go, be a part of the cool gang now, don't be left out. It's a marketing pitch to kill off broadcasting and switch you to subscribing (bring your own internet connection).
