Was going through some very rough times back then and had no internet, cellphone, or cable, only a crappy “As Seen on TV” analog antenna. It picked up 4 stations, one of which was NHK. After my personal situation improved, I found this guy Jason on YouTube and he is great! He’s an American who lives and teaches school in Japan and has a huge passion for the sport.

I’m not a fan of regular wrestling or combat sports, in general. Sumo fascinated me because there is so much extra stuff involved. It’s been fun learning about the traditions and some Japanese (albeit very limited and entirely sumo-related). I love languages so that part fascinated me, too. Not to mention the slo-mo shots, lol!

Still not sure what is considered a foul except for hair pulling. Those are the only fouls I’ve ever seen called, and very few of them.

On this level, which is the top division, each tournament lasts 15 days. They each fight one opponent per day. You must win 8 fights to maintain your rank or be promoted. Lose 8 or more and you get demoted. Basically win, in any order, more matches than you lose.

Once you are drawn to a favorite wrestler or two it becomes addictive. I got my old coworkers into it and we would get quite rowdy with our cheering and trash talking.
