Australia eliminated as Afghanistan beat Bangladesh to reach T20 World Cup semis

Australia have been bundled out of the T20 World Cup after Afghanistan secured a historic eight-run win over Bangladesh in a rain-affected thriller in St Vincent, confining the 2021 champions to a shock exit from the tournament.

The damage done by a 24-run defeat to India earlier in the day proved irreparable, despite several scenarios that would have still seen Mitch Marsh’s team through to the semi-finals with fate taken out of their own hands.
...
Australia had been solely reliant on Bangladesh – hitherto winless in the Super Eights – upsetting Afghanistan, but outside 12.1 overs, so as not to leapfrog both sides into second place in Group B on net run rate. “C’mon Bangladesh,” captain Marsh quipped after Australia’s earlier loss.
...
The last few overs were played out amid high drama, as DLS calculations constantly changed with every run made and wicket taken, in case of more rain falling.

For those not up on the details of limited-over cricket, "net run rate" is used to separate teams in a round-robin group that have ended with the same number of wins - like using points difference, but since the game stops if the 2nd side to bat overhauls the 1st, you have to compare how fast each scored. And "DLS" is the "Duckworth-Lewis-Stern" method for calculating the runs the 2nd side should have to score in a rain-shortened match - very complicated statistics that the named mathematicians worked out.

Frank Duckworth, the man whose mathematical knowledge helped to revolutionise rain-affected cricket, has died aged 84.

The Lytham-born statistician created the Duckworth-Lewis method, a model to recalculate scores when limited-over matches were curtailed by weather conditions, with fellow Lancastrian Tony Lewis.

Announcing Duckworth's death, fellow statistician Rob Eastaway said he had been "a very genial man" who was "proud" of the method, despite it leaving casual fans somewhat flummoxed.
...
At the society's conference in 1992, he presented a short paper which proposed a formula for target correction in rain interrupted one-day cricket matches.

Tony Lewis died in 2020.
