PARIS
U.S. Olympic officials say they will appeal a court ruling that resulted in American gymnast Jordan Chiles being asked to return the bronze medal she won in the Paris Olympics floor exercise.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) voided an on-floor appeal by Chiles' coach that vaulted her to third, saying the appeal came 4 seconds beyond the 1-minute time limit for scoring inquiries.
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) said Saturday night it would respect the court's decision and elevate Barbosu to third. The International Olympic Committee confirmed the ruling Sunday, announcing that it was reallocating the bronze from last Monday's women's floor final to Romanian Ana Barbosu.
"We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be addressed," the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee statement said.

PARIS The U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles must return the bronze medal she was awarded in the Olympic floor exercise final, Olympic officials announced Sunday.
Jordan Chiles, of the United States, competes during the women's artistic gymnastics individual floor finals Monday at Bercy Arena at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Chiles won bronze after a last-minute inquiry found the judges had underscored her by a tenth of a point. On Saturday, an appeals court vacated the inquiry, saying it had come four seconds too late.

But Chiles' coaches filed an inquiry over her score, saying that judges had incorrectly valued the difficulty of her routine. Judges at the event upheld the inquiry and granted Chiles an additional tenth of a point, moving her score from to 13.766. That higher score leapfrogged her over Barbosu and a second Romanian gymnast, Sabrina Maneca-Voinea.
The next day, Romanian Olympic officials protested the judges' decision, alleging that Chiles' coaches had filed their inquiry too late. On Saturday, an independent court agreed and vacated Chiles' inquiry, officially revising her score back down to 13.666.

(4,747 posts)not days later. Shame on them for yanking these young women around like this! It was their mistake both in the score they originally awarded
Chiles, and in not noticing the tardiness of her coaches' inquiry. So, own up, apologize. Award them both a medal. They each deserve that much for what they were put through.
I watched this event, and it was tough on them. Almost every one of them fell off the beam, even Simone Biles and Rebeca Andrade, the other two medalists. The Romanian gymnast was the only one I saw who didn't fall off. I even wondered, as did some of the commentators, if there was something wrong with the beam. It was that bad. This, on top of that, is just disgraceful. Award them both a bronze medal.

(79 posts)I think all 3 should share the bronze. I wouldn't give it back. People need to make a ruckus, the judges have screwed this up.

(4,747 posts)I am sick in bed with covid right now, so my covid brain misremembered the event, but the floor exercises were consistently flubbed as well. I think the events were jammed in too close together, too. They were ALL exhausted and not at their best. I felt bad for them.

(22,433 posts)4 seconds. Eff off with that. If the judges hadn't screwed up there would have been no need for an appeal to begin with. 4 seconds? Come on. the coach could have paused to sneeze or tripped over a camera cord and that is 4 seconds.
She should NOT return the medal. It was hers fair and square.

U.S. Olympic officials say they will appeal a court ruling that resulted in American gymnast Jordan Chiles being asked to return the bronze medal she won in the Paris Olympics floor exercise.
