Jim Harbaugh wants to hire Colin Kaepernick to Chargers' coaching staff. Will the QB bite?

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Colin Kaepernick has a door open to return to the NFL in what would be a grand reunion with his former coach, Jim Harbaugh.

But here’s the twist: While Kaepernick, 36, recently told Sky Sports that he still wants to play in the NFL, the new Los Angeles Chargers coach contends that he wants his former quarterback back in the NFL as a member of his coaching staff – and not so much as a player.

“If that was ever the path he was to take, I think that would be tremendous,” Harbaugh told USA TODAY Sports. “He’d be a tremendous coach, if that’s the path he chose.”

During an interview following a training camp practice last week, Harbaugh said shortly after he returned to the NFL in January, he talked to Kaepernick about joining the Chargers in a non-playing capacity. Yet in the months since, there’s been no movement on the possibility.

He was at best an average QB whose natural athletic ability had most overlooking his weaknesses in fundamentals, reading defenses, and throwing from within the pocket.

Football people knew.

Go ahead Jim. Hire him. It would be a terrible decision.

that it's frowned upon to say such things on the DU, but the stats back up what you're contending, Auggie. Kaepernick was not an elite QB at all.

I was -- am -- ready to back my opinions on Kaepernick as a quarterback.

As a non-football player I think he's done some outstanding things, including having the guts to take a knee. I'm sure there's a place and need for him somewhere on the field or front office -- perhaps a position that doesn't yet even exists (like Bill Walsh bringing in Dr. Harry Edwards, sociologist, which was revolutionary at the time).

Edwards has terminal bone cancer, BTW. Breaks my heart.

I'm not dismissive of Kaepernick the social justice champion, but to try to elevate his accomplishments on the field because you agree with his politics is little better than those on the right claiming Putin is the best hockey player or Trump a talented golfer.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- If Colin Kaepernick wants to join the Los Angeles Chargers, it will not be until next year at the earliest.

And it will only be as a member of Jim Harbaugh's coaching staff.

"I love Colin, but he's not going to be on the coaching staff, which is set for this year. And he's not going to be playing on the roster either," Harbaugh said after Thursday's practice.
