Why you should fill up on gas on Monday mornings (and never on Friday afternoons)

Want to save money at the pump? Fill up on Monday morning on your way to work.

That's the advice of GasBuddy, the fuel-savings app that tracks real-time data from more than 150,000 gas stations throughout the country.

In a study provided exclusively to USA TODAY, GasBuddy assessed the best day to fill up and the worst day to fill up nationwide and in each state.

While Monday is the best day on average nationwide to fill up, Friday is the worst day. (Scroll down to see state-by-state details on the best and worst time to get fuel.)

"Very early in the week, when gas stations are generally a little bit quieter traffic-wise, is a great time to fill up," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "We generally see more volatility and higher prices later in the week."

On Mondays, some prices tick upward in the afternoon, so it's often a good idea to fill up in the morning. On Fridays, prices often spike in part because some stations are seeking to make more money ahead of weekend trips.

The best day to buy gas, by state:

Monday: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming

Tuesday: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin

Wednesday: Hawaii

It's not like I'm going to run out, but I'll have the time and I don't like to let it get too low - but after reading this, I guess I should wait since it's supposed to be the worst day in my state.

Because points run out, prices go up.

One Grocery just gives you 10 cents off if you use their cards.

Tuesday/ Wed. Best days here.

I think it's 10-cents off a gallon there for every $100 you spend on groceries. And I also belong to GasBuddy which is mentioned in the article. I don't really expect to win a free gas card since it's open to everyone in the U.S. and Canada, LOL. But I keep track of local gas prices so I know the best places to get gas. You don't have to join, you can just check the prices in your area.

Stations every morning when I go to the Y. If the price is low I get it before because I know it will be up before I go home!

The last time I filled my tank with 15 cents off I paid $1.96. Now it is $2.70.

It was $2.59 then - so I paid $2.29. Today it was up to $2.67 where I usually go. The only stipulation is that it has to be Sunoco - they're not the cheapest, but not the most expensive, either. That would be Mobil.

I am now clearing out for the food drive, clothing drive. . Then I will work on the Boy Scouts Parking lot sale.

Fond memories of the 70s...at the end of the month at the Giant gas station as people use their points. DH always uses the points as his car has a bigger gas tank than mine.

Mormons aren't supposed to shop/buy things/go out to eat/movies/etc ... on the Sabbath.

Fun Fact: they also aren't supposed to go swimming. Apparently the Devil lives in the water on Sundays.

And have studied it a lot.

Organized Religion is made up of man made rules that have nothing to do with faith.

For me the whole thing has become a scam.sorry to feel that way. I have tried.

I do not brainwash. It is sickening what Religion is.

Of course I have read and know how Religion has controlled and been used over the centuries.

Without our Freedom of Religion it would be worse here.

My statement was my feelings on what religion has become in general,.. so far from the teachings of Jesus H. Christ.

Your comment caught my eye,... and I was just expanding upon it,... no reference to you was intended when I mentioned brainwashing.

DeWine and Republicans have increased the tax. DeWine wanted 18 cents, the Legislature less.

Not sure yet what it will be.
