Tustin, California (CNN Business) -- General Motors has unveiled the eighth generation of the Chevrolet Corvette. The model is, arguably, the biggest change for the Corvette since the sports car was first introduced in 1953.
The Corvette has changed a lot over the years, but it has always remained a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports car. The new 2020 Corvette has its engine behind the seats, a change that radically alters the car's appearance and, certainly, how it will feel to drive.

"In terms of comfort and fun, it still looks and feels like a Corvette, but drives better than any vehicle in Corvette history," said GM president Mark Reuss.

The base version of the 2020 Corvette Stingray will have a 495-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine. It will also have an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. No manual transmission will be offered. Besides being able to shift up or down using the paddles, drivers will be able to uncouple the transmission altogether by pulling on both paddles at once. This will be like holding down the clutch pedal in a car with a manual transmission.
Prices for the new Corvette Stingray will start at just under $60,000, not much more than the current version costs. That announcement came as a surprise to many analysts who had expected that, given the amount of engineering work that had to be done, this price would increase substantially. But Reuss told CNN Business that it was important that the new Corvette remain accessible to the same customers who could afford the current one.

(11,686 posts)It looks nothing like any other Corvette. It is way over the top. I also do not like the new Corvettes that do not have the round tail lights. Round tail lights are supposed to be a Corvette tradition.

(3,043 posts)My husband has owned 3 Corvettes over the years. They have ruined the design with this one, in my opinion. And the starting price turns over the engine, but you know by the time you add extra you'll be well close to $90K.
This is another example of the inequity in this country. Money talks, and leaves the rest behind.
End rant. 😎

(2,251 posts)That front end lift ability is awesome. Of course, a mid engine domestic car that can do 0-60 in under 3 seconds and starts at under $60k is pretty damn amazing! I'm not 100% sold on that button lined center console though.
I doubt my wife would let me trade in my 2016 Z06 for one. Probably a good thing though, brand new car, radically different from anything else GM has put out, the first run of these things are probably going to have all types of teething issues. Maybe if I start begging now, I'll get the OK when the '21 models are out and the inevitable teething issues are ironed out.

When we heard that the mid-engine 2020 Chevrolet Corvette would start at under $60,000, we were impressed. Especially since we were a bit concerned that the vehicle would cost over six figures. Now Chevys released its order guide showing the equipment that the sub-$60,000 car comes with. Lets take a look.
No, if you were worried (or hopeful, depending upon your perspective) that the base Corvette would come with hubcap-adorned steel wheels, cloth seats, and drum brakes, fear not: Even though the standard 1LT-trim Vette doesnt get heated seats, the base GT1 seats are eight-way power leather buckets (shown below). Plus, theres dual-zone climate control; an eight-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Near Field Communication; and a Bose 10-speaker audio system.
On top of those, theres a high-definition backup camera with park assist (handy, since theres an engine right behind you), a 12-inch gauge cluster display, keyless ignition and entry, Near Field Communication, remote start, valet mode, power windows with automatic up/down, illuminated vanity mirrors, heated manual-folding but power-adjustable side mirrors, and a power leather-wrapped tilting and telescoping steering wheel.
The base 2020 Corvette also comes with a stainless steel exhaust system, 19-inch silver aluminum wheels with 245/35ZR19 all-season tires up front, and 20-inch wheels with 305/30/ZR20s out back. The brakes are four-wheel discs with 12.6-inchers up front and 13.3-inchers out back, and theres a standard mechanical limited-slip diff in the rear to manage how the 6.2-liter small-block Chevy V8which is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmissiongets its power gets to the road.
