Ford is recalling almost 3 million vehicles because of a damaged or missing part that could prevent the automobiles from shifting into the gear intended by the driver. That could cause the vehicle to roll away or move in an "unexpected direction," according to federal regulators.
The part in question is the transmission shift cable bushing, and the recall covers multiple model years and several models of Ford vehicles:
2013-2019 Escape
2013-2018 C-Max
2013-2016 Fusion
2013-2021 Transit Connect
2015-2018 Edge
Ford plans to mail out letters to owners of record for these vehicles before the end of June; however, the parts to fix this issue will NOT be available until 4th Quarter 2022. If you happen to own or know someone who owns one of these vehicle (especially if the vehicle is more than 6-7 model years old) recommend you have them take it in so a technician can inspect this shift cable bushing. If the bushing appears cracked or brittle, recommend getting it replaced even if you have to pay to get this done (I'd have Ford do it, since they know this recall is coming).
