I was there from '70 - '72.
If I was forced into military service, I can't think of a better place to be.

So being in Monterrey when I could have been in Saigon felt really good.

occasionally. I'll take the freeway down, but I always make a point of taking California 1 all the way back home. It's the only way to go.

Loved the area, except for the freezing cold humidity. It was probably the coldest winter I ever experienced, and I'm pretty sure it never dropped below 40 degrees. (grew up in SLC, winters into the minus numbers, but 0% humidity, ORD 80-100% humidity)/

Our platoon was scheduled to patrol the ammo dumps on the cliffs one night. I was one of the "lucky" ones to help.

There were 2 of us that had to walk around the restricted area. We had live ammo to protect this area. I had to go clockwise around the fenced off area, and my "partner" had to counter-clockwise until we met and continued our circuit. It took 10-12 minutes to make a complete circuit.

Our sergeant told us to keep our hand on the fence at all time. NEVER take your hand off the fence. The reason for that order, YOU COULD NOT SEE 3-5 FEET IN FRONT OF YOU BECAUSE OF THE FOG.

We were told in no uncertain terms, if we have to come find you, you WILL BE UP FOR A ARTICLE 15.

2 hours of walking around a chain link fence, not being able to see further than 5 ft in front of you. Yeah, that's whats I trained for in Basic, & AIT.

Still love the area, but not the training.

I froze my ass off many nights pulling guard duty on the ocean side of that god-forsaken place. It's hell when you get a stiff ocean wind coming off the water and blowing in your face at three a.m.
Burrrr....
