I stumbled onto a YouTube chain of videos about DIY carbon fiber forming of vehicle parts. Some used existing parts, while others used mock-ups from foam, cardboard, and the like. For certain things, particularly when a parts supply has disappeared, this seems a viable option. I've thought about a 3D printer, but they are expensive.
I doubt that a valve cover would be a wise choice. However, dash components are something that can be hard to find, and the plastic gets brittle over time.

(10,178 posts)Or within a mile of cheap! Traditional methods of fabrication are a lot easier to deal with in most cases.
Also, for what it's worth - carbon fiber and "fiberglass" are really FRP -Fiber Reinforced Plastic! So, their plastic matrices
are subject to the same limitations in any form.
3D printing is quite limited, especially in the materials that can be used.
What do you want to make? Or fix..... I've worked with a LOT of fabrication methods as a machinist for several "advanced materials companies". Plus building hot rods in my " spare time".

(10,178 posts)Fiberglass over, also how surfboards are made. 1/8" plywood is great for flat panels, covered with upholstery, also makes great combo with fiberglass. Street rod and show car guys are wizards at this stuff.
