We're planning ahead for when my daughter is going to be commuting to college and were looking for a car that didn't cost too much and would be economical for her to drive. My wife stumbled on this 2010 Smart the other day and we managed to get a great deal on it. I was initially kind of leery of it (I drive a Mustang GT), but that little Smart is really quite comfortable for 2 people and drives pretty well also. It's no speed demon, but it's quick enough that it doesn't get on my nerves (you can put the transmission into manual-shift mode which gives a lot more control). We're driving the Smart for all of our errands etc. now, so at around 40 miles per gallon we're putting a bit less carbon in the air and saving ourselves a good amount of money for gas as well. Smart has an electric out now, I'm going to give that one a serious look for my next car.

(34,382 posts)I miss it terribly. I had one of the originals brought over from Germany in 2006 and refitted in California. I bought it used and used the heck out of it. HOWEVER....no one in the 5 state area around Kansas would work on it. Too old, different from the newer Smarts. I found a guy 70 miles away who would but since my husband can't drive (seizures, trying to get meds to work) I was stuck with a Smart that needed much and no way to really fix it. Also we live on a farm and apparently these adorable, wonderful "city cars" don't care for gravel roads and all the dust that gets into the works. It was a poor choice on my part but I sure did love it for the year and a half I had it. HAVE FUN!! They are great driving in town and really pretty darned good on the highway, I think they are too small to get Whooshed by the trucks. You have a lot of room in your lane

(12,306 posts)Or any other small, efficient vehicle for that matter. I even work with several knuckle draggers who laugh at the concept of driving something more efficient than their urban assault vehicles. Geez, just one person in the vehicle, 12 miles per gallon vs. 40 miles per gallon. Hmmmm.......

(34,382 posts)Not quite as small sadly but for the price it does pretty well and is a nice car. I got a Chevy Spark (my father is rolling in his grave, he was a Ford man). It seems huge to me compared to the Smart but when I see it in the parking lots it looks like a toy so I guess it is still OK. Not sure about the mileage yet, it has spent a fair amount of time idling while I wait at meetings my husband attends and it has been COLD! I would guess around 38 - 40 highway. I have to use the highway to get anywhere from the farm so city mileage I don't have a clue about.
People would point and laugh at me in the Smart then I would just speed past them. I figure if they were going to slow down just to laugh then they deserved to get left behind. They probably had no idea the car could go that fast
