Turns out, the problem wasnt with the main battery, but the smaller, low-voltage onethe kind that has been found under the hood for decades. In some new electric-car models, these 12-volt batteries are dying repeatedly and unexpectedly, leaving drivers stranded and needing a jump to get going again.
It isnt clear how widespread the issue is. But it has taken many owners by surprise, led to numerous complaints online and affected some high-profile EV launches in recent years from major car brands, such as Hyundai, Rivian and Cadillac. It also has prompted at least two regulatory probes.
While these batteries dont move the vehicles themselves, they do provide juice to the interior lights and electronics, which in EVs tend to be far more sophisticated and power-hungry.
As a result, the 12-volt batteries are almost always on and deplete faster than those in gas-powered vehicles, said Amod Kumar, an industry analyst at research firm S&P Global Mobility.
Some car companies have also struggled with software glitches and other hardware problems that have accelerated the drain on the battery, even when the car is in park.

(11,474 posts)My 2013 RAV4 EV went through a few. Toyota wasn't all that interested in making those, so they cheaped out on little details like the battery.
My VW EV has been good for 3 years so far.

(3,743 posts)I saw a lady get stuck pulling out of a parking space that had a puddle on the side. Her wheels were spinning, but weirdly only the slippy one was actually spinning, the second wheel wasn't spinning like it would in a normal car. I realized later some setting might have been needed to be shifted to get it to use the regular gas drive train. This was a Prius. It seems there are some edge cases with this tech that will take awhile to really get perfected.

(4,851 posts)We pulled to the side of a dirt road becasue a tree had fallen and they were clearing it out of the way. The front left wheel was just touching and so it spun when the throttle pedal was depressed. I just sat on the front fender and my wife was able to pull forward.
So it has not limited slip differential.
