Biden administration finalizes US crackdown on Chinese vehicles

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Joe Biden's outgoing administration is finalizing rules on Tuesday that will effectively bar nearly all Chinese cars and trucks from the U.S. market, as part of a crackdown on vehicle software and hardware from China.

Washington's latest move against Chinese vehicles comes after the Commerce Department said this month it was considering a similar crackdown on Chinese-made drones, in the wake of last year's steep tariff hikes on imports of its electric vehicles.

"It's really important because we don't want two million Chinese cars on the road and then realize ... we have a threat," Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told Reuters in an interview, citing national security concerns.

In September, her department proposed a sweeping ban on key Chinese software and hardware in connected vehicles on American roads, with software prohibitions to take effect in the 2027 model year and those on hardware in 2029. They also bar Chinese car companies from testing self-driving cars on U.S. roads.

determining what is best for us. IMHO, competition drives quality and innovation. Isolationism is not a good thing for our nation, no matter how politically correct it might seem.

American automobiles seem overpriced to me.

I watch the reviews on chinese vehicles and for the price compared to what we can get are far superior. But I also understand national security and china flooding the market with cheap cars putting US made cars out of business.

So the protectionism is to protect our domestic production of automobiles (jobs). Benefiting a small number of producers at the expense of American consumers.

When we impose a tariff, they are likely to retaliate, both nations putting tariffs on each other’s goods, which disrupts our supply chains and again at the expense of the American consumer.

Want to know why the billionaires and multinational companies "kiss the ring"? Because this picking and choosing of winners by the government creates opportunities for corruption, so they seek to influence policy to gain protection from competition.

All of this causes a lack of trust in our economic system at the expense of the American consumer.

A protectionist economy leads to higher prices for consumers due to reduced competition from foreign goods, which puts the interests of domestic producers ahead of consumers.

In a consumer based economy this is the perfect recipe for INEQUALITY.

This keeps perhaps the best and cheapest competition out of his US market.
