Cardinals' pitcher Adam Wainwright reaches 200 wins

He's 42, so Father Time is going to close the door soon. And he's also been playing for St. Louis his entire career.

To be a shoo-in for Cooperstown, a starting pitcher used to need 300 wins, or close to it. But in today's game, pitchers don't rack up nearly as many innings due to bigger and more active bullpens.

I'm not saying Wainwright should be a Hall of Famer, but the criteria needs a rethink for the modern game. Even Max Scherzer is only at 214 career wins. Clayton Kershaw is at 209. Gerrit Cole has 143 wins!

With his final season winding down, Adam Wainwright was stuck on 198 wins for nearly three months.

And then in a span of seven days, he found that old form and reached a major milestone.

Wainwright earned his 200th win, pitching seven innings of four-hit ball in a vintage performance as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 on Monday night.

"For at least a night I was a real pitcher out there, the guy that I want to be," said Wainwright, who plans to retire after the season. "Seven innings, shutout, a couple of hits, got through a couple of tough ABs out there and made adjustments, worked in and out, up and down."

Were they among the best during their time in baseball? Pretty simple to judge, especially in an age of advanced metrics. BAA, ERA+ (park & team adjusted), K/BB ratio, and so on.
If they were top 3, or 5, or 10 for their era, wins don't count as much.
Sandy Koufax only had 165 wins, but for 7 years his stats say he was the best pitcher in baseball. In fact, it's not that close. Sandy is in the HoF, and he belongs there.
Wins are useless now in the era of 5 man rotations & skipping starts. They are extremely dependent on appearances and they just don't pitch as much anymore.
Kershaw has ZERO chance of hitting 300 wins, but I can't see anybody making a credible claim he wasn't in the handful of best pitchers of his era. Same with Scherzer.
The voters are going to have to rethink the "automatic" entry points.
