Angels: did you hear about that call

against Nolan Schanuel of the Angels?

In short: a play in which he reached first when the first baseman dropped the throw was ruled a hit, extending the rookie's on-base streak to 30.

Then the review: not a hit. An error.

Why it matters: " . . . all the positivity surrounding Schanuel and his attempt to break the all-time on-base record to start a career was derailed because of MLB's foolish decision . . . ."

MLB is getting a lot of crap already this season, and from what I hear, it's well-deserved.

1. Sorry, if 1B drops the ball, then he reached on error and it is not a hit. The scoring of an error is the correct call.

I'm assuming Schanuel didn't reach base on his other ABs in that game?

4. See vid in the link below. 1b made a great catch, then tossed it to the pitcher who couldn't find the handle.

6. It is either an error on 1b (crappy throw) or on that pitcher (poor glove work). No matter who the blame is

9. Exactly. Room for debate as to who made the error.

The toss from 1b to p was weak and behind, but I think catchable, so i'd give the error to the pitcher. But yes, either way, he got to first on an error.

An unfortunate aspect is that if the first baseman hadn't made that great catch and the ball went past him into the outfield, it wouldn't have been an error. At least I think so. Not sure how they decide if it's an error is a fielder doesn't pull off a difficult catch or stop.

8. Sorry, that's an error. If he had hit the bag before the 1st baseman had dropped the ball...

then it would've been a hit. Unfortunately, the ball got there, and was dropped, before he got there.

I was too wrapped up in feeling bad for the kid that I didn't even think to watch the clip.

Clearly an error.

I'm only slightly embarrassed, though.

The Angels broadcasters blew it. I don't know what their reasoning was - maybe sentimentality for the kid.
