SAN FRANCISCO -- Catching coach Alex Burg, 36, was preparing to receive Camilo Dovals final warmup pitch when the stadium lights suddenly blacked out in preparation for the All-Star closers new dramatic ninth-inning entrance at Oracle Park, forcing Burg to try to catch the ball in the dark.
I knew they were going to do something, but obviously, I didnt know when it was going to happen, so that was a little bit of a shock that it was right as he was releasing the ball, Burg said Tuesday.
Fortunately for Burg, Doval -- who has clocked as high as 104 mph -- threw a four-seam fastball before stepping out into the new spotlights, allowing Burg to catch the pitch and avoid serious harm.
If it would have been a sinker or a slider, I probably would have died, Burg said. No chance I catch those, because theyre so nasty. But the four-seamer stays pretty true, especially in the pen. It gave me a little bit better of a shot to catch it.

(37,911 posts)Why would Camilo Doval be throwing his top end heater while warming up? I know he only pitches one inning, and I know little about what's involved, but isn't that just asking for trouble?

(31,816 posts)just that he had reached 104 MPH in the past.
Even a 85 mph slider would kill.

(37,911 posts)I saw that 104 MPH and started riffing on Steve Dalkowski, guesstimated to have been the fastest pitcher ever (pre radar days). Witnesses spitball his speed at, like, 105-110 MPH
Dalkowski was also famous for his unpredictable performance and inability to control his pitches, and was the model for Nuke Laloosh in the film, Bull Durham.
Steve Dalkowski once threw a one hitter, but lost 9-8 due to 17 walks; there were some genuine control issues.
