On the night honoring Willie at home. The entire team wore 24, and the catch was perfect for the night.

Edited to say Mays style.
Of course, a rookie isnt going to equal the greatest, but I think it honored him just to come anywhere near. ⚾️

(30,168 posts)it was a good catch, but his eyes never lost the ball.

(2,901 posts)The polo grounds catch was made near the 483 foot mark. In every ball park, even the thin air of Coors Field, that ball is a home run. In most parks that ball is in the second deck or higher of the stadium.
He ran farther than any center fielder could run today, caught the ball, and threw to prevent the Indians from scoring.
Members of the Indians said they knew they had no chance if Mays could get to that and throw it back before they could score. They said the catch broke their belief they could win.
No one, ever, no one will make that catch and the recency bias of sports center and top plays has done Willie Mays crushing of the Cleveland Indians hearts a great injustice.

(37,802 posts)Willie Mays was able to make "The Catch" at the Polo Grounds because he played first at Rickwood Field, and Rickwood Field is HUGE (centerfield marked at 470 feet).
Willie Mays making the famous catch at the Polo Grounds was just another day at the office.
That 483 mark at the Polo Grounds was that wicked 'Inside-the-park home run alley'. A 420 foot hit in the Polo Grounds would have been considered a stand-up-triple with any other centerfielder.
