Rickey Henderson and Sports Illustrated

Awesome and Young Rickey Henderson has left us in late December. Highlighting a whiny peeve of mine.

On the last page of the 15 December Sports Illustrated (print edition) it states:

Several Sports Icons who graced our Cover passed away IN 2024. 14 sports figures and their SI covers are shown. Rickey Henderson died in 2024 and graced the cover of SI. He is not in that issue. Because he died too late in the year?

They do it every year. Drives me nuts. Love Ya Rickey, thx for making the game great.

1. Rickey is Why I fell in love with baseball

When I was 12 it was Rickey's rookie year . Back then Chewing tabbacky was
everywhere in baseball. The players would spit their cud while rounding the bases .
Well Rickey's mama made sure her son didn't get addicted to tobacco. He chewed
bubble gum and he blew bubbles while rounding the bases . As a kid he quickly
became my favorite player . and Very soon after he became everyone's favorite .

I've been an A's fan my whole life .

That's my Rickey Story .

3. As An A's Fan, I Think You'll Like This

When I was a kid, I was a Cub fan. (Still am.)
But, I wanted a favorite American League team.
Well, it's against the rules in Chicago to be a fan of both the Cubs & Sox.
And, I didn't want to be a Yankee fan. Too easy.
So, I decided on the Kansas City A's. They had Campineris, Green, Hunter, and they had the cool white shoes and the yellow & green uniforms.
When they moved to Oakland, it changed nothing for me. I was over the moon when they won 3 straight WS titles, especially since they won the first 2 against Cincinnati & the Mets. (I hated both of those teams.)
I'm more a casual fan now, so I only care hor the Cubs are doing, but I dug the A's for a long time.

Growing up in the east bay of the Bay Area, the A's because of BART were the easiest
team to go see as kid growing up . My mom was always a SF Giants fan My dad an
A's fan so I grew up going to both the Coliseum and Candlestick . Falling in love with
Rickey made me an A's fan for life . I only root against the Giants when they are playing
the A's .

I'm not a Cub fan that hates the Sox or wants to see them do badly.
When they won the WS, I was happy for their fans.
But, in a crosstown game, I want to see the Cubs crush them.
Oh, and I want the A's to beat them, I guess. Old habits die hard.
