Shaw will return to utility status so that could make him a trade possibility.

While he isn't there yet offensively, he's a wonder defensively - at multiple places on the field. He can't play behind the plate or on the mound, but he would be a gold glove candidate anywhere else. He was a finalist at third base last year despite playing fewer than 100 games. The Cubs would have to get someone really, really good to justify trading him, and it's unlikely any team would bite.

If there's an injury anywhere besides center field, I think Shaw would be inserted into the lineup. If Swanson was hurt at shortstop, they would move Nico Hoerner over and pop Shaw in at 2nd. Otherwise Shaw could play for the injured man at his position. He needs to play more to get his hitting stroke, and the Cubs lineup is already loaded. They know this; it's the kind of problem teams like to have.

Kind of a pity he can't pitch.
