On this day in 1940, 21-year-old Bob Feller threw the only Opening Day no-hitter in MLB history.

The final score was 1-0. The lone run was scored on an RBI triple by catcher Rollie Hemsley.

Bob Feller throws Opening Day no-no, 78 years ago today |

On April 16, 1940, 21-year-old Cleveland Indians pitcher Bob Feller threw the first and only Opening Day no-hitter in MLB history, defeating the Chicago White Sox 1-0 at Comiskey Park. In cold, windy conditions, "Rapid Robert" struck out eight and walked five, with the lone run scoring on a fourth-inning triple by catcher Rollie Hemsley.

******. On the Baltimore-Cleveland game broadcast tonight, the Cleveland team historian brought out the glove worn by Feller when he pitched that game. Cool stuff.

My dad pitched in the sandlot leagues in Cleveland and you can guess who his idol was.

I am a baseball fan and a Bowie fan, too. Cool on south side of Chicago. Michelle Obama’s home town!
