Giants win wild-card game on Gillaspie’s home run
NEW YORK The Giants got Conor Gillaspie last winter for nothing. Absolutely nothing. On Wednesday night, he gave them everything.
Gillaspie, a fill-in third baseman, hit a three-run homer off Mets closer Jeurys Familia with one out in the ninth inning to break a scoreless tie and give the Giants a 3-0 victory that kept their season alive.
Their triumph behind a typically dominating Madison Bumgarner in the National League wild-card game sent the Giants onward in their quest for a fourth straight even-year championship, to a date with the Chicago Cubs in a Division Series that begins Friday night.
Bumgarner did not need to burnish his reputation as one of historys greatest postseason pitchers, but he did, throwing a four-hitter.
As he did in the 2014 wild-card game in Pittsburgh, Bumgarner pitched a shutout, outlasting and outdueling fire-throwing Noah Syndergaard.
