What a year.

(60,500 posts)We were actually at the next to last game (which they barely won)....glad we didn't stay for the final disaster.
Interested in the wheeling and dealing that will go on, as I focus on the Pats and Bruins - also looking forward to the Celtics just a little bit (watching all from afar here in NC!)

(679 posts)Today's Boston Globe says Valentine is looking at making Bard a starter, which means they need to get a closer. Looking at Ryan Madson, who was with the Phillies last year and Andrew Bailey of Oakland. The latter may cost them some prospects, but they don't have many to spare.

(60,500 posts)and thankfully not the last night disaster. My view is that the team looked off all season long.
We shall see what happens - wish they'd make a few deals.....wish they'd sign Ells! Heard they want to make Bard a starter......and no Paps......one thing for sure, they will be entertaining!

(194 posts)A manager that is bigger than the team in a huge media market...what could go wrong? Valentine should be fine, it's the field talent that is the question mark. losing the closer, possibly the set up man if Bard becomes a starter. Melancon may be an answer, but is another question mark. A 37 yr old DH that will be complaining about his contract in June is another. right field? Beckett's head, Buchholz health, and a very pedestrian shortstop? Youkillis, less so, but he's been hurt too. Catching? does Salty or Shoppach make anyone sleep well? Crawford? I expect a bounce back year from him. Could be worse. Could be a Yankees fan.

(10,115 posts)a strong bullpen with either Aceves or Bard remaining in the pen while one tries to start. Fill out the back end of the rotation and their pitching should be fine
