It’s funny that they call this “the catch,” because the throw was maybe even better. The Polo Grounds was absolutely cavernous, about 500 feet to deep center field, where the catch was made. Runners were on first and second, and after the play, they were at first and third. Neither runner would score.

Legend has it that Don Liddle, who only pitched to Wertz, sat down at the bench and said, “Well, I got my man.”
