(63,198 posts)Boy what a year he had.
So I googled and got this:
Fred Lynn and Ichiro Suzuki are the only two players who have been named Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in the same year, and Fernando Valenzuela is the only player to have won Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Award in the same year.
While Suzuki was a rookie in American baseball, in reality he was a grizzled vet of the Japanese League.
Valenzuela - once again what a year that was. He was on national TV the day something snapped in his arm with that screwball he threw. IIRC he pitched at least a couple of more innings in what had to be great pain and a very slow fast ball. I was watching that day.
Gibson may have won the World Series MVP as a rookie. Pretty sure he did win that award at some point.

(13,248 posts)playing in a given league their first year (moving from the AL to the NL). For example, Gibson played his whole career, up till 1988 with the Tigers in the AL, 1988 was his first year in NL and won the MVP his first year in the NL.
That's why I had to research it a bit.

Such a hole in the world.
It kind of feels like missing somebody who is a prisoner somewhere. Just hoping they will come back safe and sound, just the way they were.
