Roy Steele, the Oakland A's 'Voice of God,' dies
Roy Steele, "the Voice of God" who was the Oakland A's public-address announcer for almost 40 years, died Thursday in his home in Auburn, the team said.
"We mourn the loss of 'the Voice of God' Roy Steele, who passed away today in his home," the A's tweeted. "As the PA voice of the A's for nearly four decades, his booming baritone filled the Coliseum from the Mustache Gang to Billy Ball, the Bash Brothers and Moneyball.
Steele became the A's announcer in 1968, the year the team moved from Kansas City to Oakland, and didn't put down the microphone until 2005 (although he did work sporadically during the 2007-08 season), after contracting achalasia, a rare disorder of the esophagus.
Steele worked more than 3,000 A's baseball games, including six World Series and an All-Star Game, missing just five days in 38 years of service.

His voice was always welcomed, whether heard in the park or via radio or television. Anybody who ever followed the Athletics knows what I mean. It meant baseball.
