Giants win in 10th after L.A. ties it in 9th
Los Angeles -- - They got off to a fantastic start. Six weeks in, they had the second-best record in the National League at 23-15 and took advantage of a Dodgers malaise to lead the West by two games. Then, a terrible trip and devastating injury to Angel Pagan sank their playoff hopes long before the All-Star Game.
This was the Giants' 2013 story. Six weeks into 2014, some of the parallels are uncanny. With Sunday's 7-4, 10-inning victory against the Dodgers, they are tied with the Brewers for the league's best record at 24-14 and again lead the West by two games, but just lost Brandon Belt for at least six weeks to a fractured thumb.
The Giants have reached the nexus between this year and last. They have the opportunity to rewrite history or repeat it. Manager Bruce Bochy said he would like to think 2013 cannot happen again.
"We're a little more dimensional," he said. "We have a little more power and we have a little more depth in our pitching with the rotation, having a couple of long men.
