Bumgarner helps Giants top Diamondbacks

Phoenix --

Joe Panik's "oh my goodness" moment did not occur when he had his first major-league plate appearance and walked Saturday, nor when he took his position for the first time Sunday, nor even as he stood on base after he singled in the fifth inning for his first big-league hit.

It was after the inning, as teammates ran to their positions and one by one patted Panik on the back, when the 23-year-old realized where he was and what he had done.

"Honestly, that's when it hit me," Panik said after he made his first big-league start and contributed to a 4-1 victory over the Diamondbacks that gave the Giants' consecutive wins and a series victory for the first time since they swept the Mets on June 6-8.

"When they were all saying, 'Congratulations, attaboy, good job,' that's when it sank in," Panik said.
