Cain to meet surgeon to discuss elbow injury

Matt Cain, a cornerstone of the Giants' rotation since 2006 who is signed through 2017, is in danger of missing not only the rest of this season but all of the 2015 season as well.

That's not a given, but it's certainly plausible, considering the right-hander flew to Florida on Tuesday to meet with Dr. James Andrews to get a second opinion on his elbow problem.

Andrews, who is renowned for performing Tommy John surgery, will examine Cain on Wednesday morning.

Cain, who's on the disabled list because of bone chips causing elbow inflammation, has not pitched since beating the A's on July 9.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy stressed that Tommy John surgery is not an inevitability for Cain.
