(57,481 posts)If he doesn't get to 700 home runs this season, the Cardinals have to bring him back net year to do it, and even to see if he wants to play the whole season as he's still a productive DH.

(3,016 posts)As a lifelong resident of SW PA, I've grown accustomed to bad baseball played by the home team.
Plus he's got like 170 homers against the bucs.

(9,167 posts)The man simply had the best decade of any Cardinal ever. They intentionally low-balled him to make him leave and keep Stan's record intact. He needs 13 to do it. And then too close to the Babe not to to try.
If they would have re-signed him he would have probably 800+ now as he moped in LA for about a decade.
But beyond baseball:

That's effed up if that's what happened. Musical was a great player, one of the greatest hitters ever so it wouldn't have taken anything away from him if Albert topped his home run total.
Tsk, tsk, tsk. Racism and some white people...they hurt themselves.

(9,167 posts)Stan was very welcoming of players crossing the "identity barrier".
Another factor could be Albert saying he shouldn't take less just because he is a Latino.

so those hoping for him to return for another year are going to be disappointed.
But its great seeing him go out with a bang! This coming from a Brewers fan (pretty much resigned to seeing the Cards win the NL Central this year): its wonderful to see him passing stinkin ARod in the all-time HR table, and I hope Pujols hits 10 more in the next two weeks. (Just not too many against the Brew Crew, please!).
And did you see the diving stop he made on a play this weekend? He still can play great defensively, too!
