Some owners are arguing for significant change to lessen payroll disparity when the current labor contract expires after the 2026 season, and MLB established another committee to examine economics.
History would suggest that an economic committee ... is really hyperfocused on a salary cap or getting to a salary cap when we next sit down to negotiate, union head Tony Clark said Saturday.
Were never going to agree to a cap. Let me start there. We dont have a cap, were not going to agree to a cap, Clark added. A salary cap is the ultimate restriction on player value and player salary. We believe in a market system. The market system has served our players, our teams and our game very well.
Clark suggested some teams maintain low payrolls as strategy rather than because of lack of revenue.

Words of a greedy, out-of-touch asshole. Few teams can match the BILLION DOLLAR media rights that the Dodgers receive. Wealth disparity is undermining baseball, just as it undermines Democracy.

(70,123 posts)Also, I find describing their organization as a union.
I worked with & around union people for decades.
Not once did I know one that had a contract different from the others.
It's more a guild of independent contractors that doesn't resemble what my dad belonged to. (Teamsters)
Also, those unions were looking for the best deal, but they weren't trying to harm the employer. They understood the deal has to work for everyone, including those outside the loop.
The MLBPA has never been concerned about the greater good of the game.
Marvin Miller was 50 years ago. The owners are closer to partners than adversaries. The need for militancy ended long ago.
