Years ago, a work colleague and friend sometimes came up with interesting trivia challenges. Like, name a full major league 9-player squad with z in their name (easy) or a squad of players with a color name. (A favorite pairing was the pitching matchup of Black v Blue.)
Anyway, I noticed there are currently quite a few major leaguers named Austin. So without searching online, can we put together a 9-player squad of Austins?
Ill start with two: pitcher Austin Nola (Phillies) and at 3B, Austin Riley (Braves).
Additions?

(1,805 posts)3B- Austin Riley (Braves)
OF- Austin Hays (Orioles)
C- Austin Hedges (Pirates)
Ill add:
OF- Austin Meadows (Tigers)
and remove pitcher A. Nola (Phillies), whose first name is actually Aaron. (This is trivia stuff is harder when yr memory is crappy, as is mine!)
Im sure there are more Austins in MLB. Well come across them eventually!

(1,805 posts)One additions from the Dodgers and two from the Rockies:
Austin Barnes, C - Dodgers
Austin Gomber, P -Rockies
Austin Winns, C - Rockies
A lot of these Austins seem to be catchers or pitchers.
Austin Meadows, OF of Tigers (earlier with the Rays), is on the 60 day injured list, but I did hear a report recently that he may have retired. So he may be put on the Team Austin taxi squad.

(1,805 posts)Okay, so at last I looked at all the 40-man MLB rosters for players named Austin (thus demonstrating again my anal retentive nature!) and found more than enough Austins to field a 9-player squad. However, the group is mostly comprised of pitchers and catchers. Three outfielders, but no infielders (at least not with their usual positions). The list:
Austin Cox, LHP, Royals
Austin Gomber, LHP -Rockies
Austin Pruitt, RHP, As
Austin Voth, RHP, Orioles
Austin Warren, RHP, Angels
Austin Barnes, C, batR - Dodgers
Austin Hedges, C, batR - Rangers (traded just before deadline from the Pirates)
Austin Winns, C, batR - Rockies
Austin Hays, OF, batR, Orioles
Austin Meadows, OF, batL, Tigers IL60
and rumored to be retired)
Austin Slater, OF, batR, Giants
I find it curious that so many players have the same first name!
If one expands the list to players named *ustin (i.e. Dustin or Justin), there are a whole bunch more MLB players.
